The Londonderry Rescue Squad has 38 members from Londonderry and the surrounding communities of Weston, South Londonderry, Peru, Landgrove and Winhall.  The squad  includes 33 Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), of which thirteen are EMT-Intermediates, trained to start pre-hospital IVs, perform advanced interventions, and administer several medications in critical medical and trauma situations.  EMT-Is are trained to administer Epinephrine, nalaxone (Narcan®), and 50% dextrose.  Twelve of our EMT-Is have taken their training one step further and have received certification as EMT-I-03s.  EMT-I-03s are able to administer even more advanced medications – including nitroglycerin and aspirin for cardiac calls, Albuterol® breathing treatments, and Glucagon® and thiamine for diabetic emergencies.

LVRS responds to approximately 450-500 calls per year.  We provide 24-hour coverage, seven days a week, 365 days a year and have been doing so since 1963.  From 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., we rotate six on-duty teams.  Each team has four members with at least one EMT-I-03 and two EMTs.  All daytime calls have at least three crew members (and frequently four) on board.

All patients transported by LVRS in any of the towns we serve are transported to the hospital of their choice so long as it does not endanger their health by bypassing a nearer or more appropriate facility and it is not a critical call.  We regularly transport patients to several facilities, including Southern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, Springfield Hospital, Mountain Valley Medical Center in Londonderry, Carlos Otis Clinic at Stratton, Rutland Regional Medical Center, and Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.  It has been our experience that most residents have a preferred hospital or doctor and that they know to which facility they would like to be transported.  In the rare situation when a resident does not have a preference – and, in the all-too-common situation when a visitor to the area does not have a preference – we will work with the patient and/or their family and friends to determine which facility is best for them.
